Substitute Teacher

In New York State, substitute teachers fall into three (3) categories:

  1. Certified Teachers

  2. Working Towards Teacher Certification

  3. Uncertified and Not Pursuing Teacher Certification

Each of these categories have specific requirements and may impact the allowable substitute teaching days permitted. For more information describing each of these categories.

Individuals employed as substitute teachers who are not certified may be employed for up to 40 days during a school year, unless such individual is in a program and pursuing teacher certification.

Minimum requirements for substitute teachers:

  1. Must hold a B.A. or B.S. degree in an accredited institution.

  2. Active TEACH profile on NYSED website showing the following completed training workshops:

    (i) Dignity for All Students Act (DASA)

    (ii) School Violence Intervention and Prevention

    (iii) Child Abuse Identification

  3. Fingerprints on file with New York State Education Department.

Substitute Teaching Assistant

Substitute teaching assistants must either be certified New York State Department of Education (NYSED) teachers or teaching assistants.
