To our Locust Valley Central School District families,

Last month, the Commissioner of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) issued an order prohibiting the enforcement of our Oct. 15, 2025, Title IX resolution as originally adopted. The resolution had outlined the district’s intention to align with the federal interpretation of Title IX and require all students to utilize the district’s gender-neutral bathrooms and locker rooms or those which correspond to their biological sex.

The Board of Education continues to navigate the complex legal process related to the contradicting mandates from the New York State Education Department and the United States Department of Education, as stated in our previous response to the Commissioner’s order.

After careful consideration and further discussion amongst the Board of Education and with our legal counsel, a complaint has been filed in federal court regarding the Title IX ruling from the New York State Education Department on behalf of the Board of Education. The filing outlines our concerns on this matter, specifically, the difficult position we are placed in as a result of these contradictory directives and the threat of lost funding from both offices.

Most importantly, we remain committed to providing students and staff with a safe and comfortable learning environment where they each feel valued and respected. Additionally, we seek to ensure our district is not at risk of losing either state or federal funding, as these funds are essential to continue providing the high-quality educational and extracurricular experience our students deserve and our community expects. We look forward to updating our community on this matter in the near future.

Respectfully,

The Locust Valley Central School District Board of Education
