A blank metal container at Bayville Intermediate School has become a colorful celebration of school pride, thanks to a collaborative student art project.
Students worked with BOCES Arts in Education mural artist John Dinaro to transform the container into a vibrant addition to the school’s outdoor space. Locust Valley art teacher Donna Chaplin guided students through the project.
The mural features a falcon, the district’s mascot, sports equipment and a playground scene surrounding the school’s name and the message “Be Your Best Self.” Together, these elements bring a familiar sense of play and school spirit to the outdoor setting.
“Pablo Picasso said, 'Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.' Our students did exactly that—washing away a neighborhood eyesore and leaving behind a beautiful legacy for all of us. It takes true vision to look at an everyday eyesore and see a work of art waiting to happen. Through their talent and hard work, our students transformed a simple container into a beautiful, enduring gift for our entire community to share,” said Superintendent Dr. Kristen Turnow.
The finished mural offers a lasting display of the students’ creativity and collaboration.
