Toby Lamb

Locust Valley High School Senior Toby Lamb has been named a semifinalist in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program.

He is one of more than 16,000 students nationwide to earn this recognition. Semifinalists represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors.

Toby received the distinction based on his performance on the PSAT/NMSQT administered last October.

He said he has had many encouraging teachers along the way. “I think I’ve had a lot of teachers that pushed me, and inspired me and meant a lot to me in a lot of different subjects,” Toby said.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition, including submitting an essay. From over 16,000 semifinalists, more than 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level, and in February they will be notified of this designation.

When talking about his future, Toby is excited to go to college. “I really like learning, and I think it’s an experience I’ll really enjoy,” he said.

“Toby’s recognition as a National Merit Semifinalist is a powerful testament to his extraordinary drive and relentless pursuit of academic excellence. Earning a spot among the top 1% of students nationwide reflects not only his intellect, but the discipline and genuine love of learning he brings to school every day. With his quiet determination and authentic passion for growth, Toby’s dedication embodies the highest standard of student achievement, and we could not be prouder. His success is a well-deserved reward for his hard work, and we are excited to support him as he takes this next step toward his future.,” said high school Principal Patrick DiClemente.
